Description
Introduction:
Office based surgery and procedures are common in urological practices. More recently there has been a shift to transition minor urological surgeries, which were previously performed in the operating room, to be offered in an office based setting. Office based surgery offers numerous advantages. Patient factors include avoidance of general anesthesia, reduced preparation and inconvenience, decrease cost, and continuity of the care team. Providers are typically afforded increased flexibility in scheduling and efficiency.
Methods:
Patient selection is critical. The ideal patient to undergo office based varicocelectomy is thin, and endorses that they would tolerate an awake procedure. Patients who are anxious or uncomfortable during the physical exam typically will not tolerate the procedure. Patients are typically pre-medicated with 20mg of oral midazolam.
Results:
The stepwise surgical approach is outlined herein.
Conclusion:
Office based varicocelectomy is well tolerated in the office setting with proper patient counseling and preparation.
